Report on the inaugural speech of Bundestag President Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert

At the beginning of his speech, Bundestag President Lammert welcomed the joint initiative of the German-Omani Association and the German-Arab Parliamentary Group on the Oman Conference in the German Bundestag, because "Oman is not the largest among the Arab-speaking countries in the world and not even the most striking state in the Gulf region, but it is undoubtedly one of the most interesting countries, facing the region in general and as the Arab world as a whole." He therefore wanted more public perception about the importance of Oman for the development of the region and the relations between the countries in the region.

Oman has had an astounding development in many respects. For example, the Sultan and the policy he was responsible for succeeded in directing the country's resources with a considerable concentration on the areas of infrastructure, education and health and thus also to produce a result "remarkable in comparison to countries in the region."

In addition, Oman has been pursuing a policy for a long period of time, which contributes to resolving and pacifying conflicts, the Bundestag president emphasized. On occasion, difficult and complicated bridges between countries that are not ready and capable of such cooperation are also being struck. A special role is played by the religion and the culture of the country for the development perspectives not only of Oman but of the whole region. In a conversation with the minister of religion, he noted the particular open-mindedness, the interest not only in one's own religion, but also in the dialogue of religions, in the exchange of experiences, in the exploitation of tolerance. This would be desirable in the whole region and beyond, even if the state's understanding of religion, as in other countries, also had differing views.

The President of the Bundestag sees development opportunities in terms of dynamic economic relations. For many years Germany has had very close trade relations with Oman and many German companies are represented in Oman. Oman is, in many respects, an interesting place for the development of relationships and the potential for this is certainly not exhausted. "We also have more than just solid political relations between our countries, as is the case with governments, which is also increasingly true of parliamentary contacts", said Prof. Lammert.

At the end of his Oman speech, he encouraged this cooperation to be extended to the work of foundations, non-profit organizations, in particular political foundations. He finds it a pity that there is a great reluctance not only in Oman, but also in Oman, where there might be some room for maneuver to work together.

He thanked all those who took the initiative to this conference and expressed confidence in the bilateral relations and their exemplary importance for the region.
