Oman Conference at the German Bundestag

Successful cooperation between the German-Omani Association and the German-Arab Parliamentary Group

What is the state of German-Oman relations and what makes the Sultanate of Oman a special and outstanding country in a difficult neighborhood?

The Oman conference, organized by the German-Arab Parliamentary Group and the German-Omani Association, was held in the German Bundestag on Wednesday, 29 March 2017. Prominent speakers were Bundestag President Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert and the Secretary General of the Omani Foreign Ministry, Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi.

Members of the German-Arab Parliamentary Group, other interested members of the Bundestag, members of the Management Board and members of the German-Omani Association living in Berlin and the surrounding area, were invited to the meeting.

The presentations of the high-profile speakers concerned foreign policy, economic policy, as well as German-Omani cooperation in the cultural and scientific field. The 70 participants were thus able to gain an overview of the most important issues that are currently relevant to Oman.

The conference was chaired by the Parliamentary Advisory Board of the German-Omani Society, Gabriele Schmidt MdB, as well as by DOG President Bruno Kaiser. The opening speech was given by the President of the Bundestag, Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert, followed by Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi.

Jürgen Schneider from the Federal Foreign Office and Dr. Rudolf Gridl from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology illuminated the current foreign policy and economic aspects. Oman as an attractive investment location was presented by Deputy General Secretary of the Supreme Council for Planning, Talal Al Rahbi.

Hendrik Schulz from Europoles reported on the experiences of a German company in Oman. DOG vice president Joachim Düster emphasized the special geopolitical as well as strategic position of Oman in the Indian Ocean. The scientific-technological cooperation of Germany with Oman, among other things in connection with the German University of Technology Maskat, was introduced by Prof. Michael Jansen (GUTech) and Dr. Ludwig Stroink from the Helmholtz Association.

DOG President Bruno Kaiser concluded the conference with a summary and thanks to the speakers, the organizers, the German-Arab parliamentarian group, the Omani ambassador HE Lyutha Sultan Ahmed Al Mughairy, as well as to the interpreters who translated the conference into German and Arabic.
