On 28 May 2016, the Center for Development Research (ZEF), together with the University of Bonn, organized the "Arabic Abstract Calligraphy Workshop" with the omani artist Saleh al Shkairi. The workshop was funded by the German-Omani Association. The 40 participants from all cultural backgrounds began the workshop with a brief introduction to the culture and arts of the Oman. Then the film "Islamic Art in Oman" by Wolfgang Ettlich was presented while Omanian coffee and dates were served.
After an introduction by the artist, participants began to create Arabic letters and shapes with ladle paper. In an interactive unit with the artist, the participants were able to create their own piece of contemporary Arab art, which they were also allowed to take home with them.
In addition, there was a bag full of information about Oman for all participants. The participants, among whom were some who until then had very little knowledge of Oman, were extremely dedicated and will perhaps travel to Oman one day.
