Fascinating landscapes, ancient history -- and philatelic treasures: the Sultanate of Oman is guest at the Museum for Communication in Berlin with the exhibition "Greetings from Oman."
Oman, located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, presents itself as a cultural and historic tourist destination, and through its stamps illuminates little-known facets of its postal history.
In addition to numerous previously unseen pieces of Omani philately, there are many typical exhibition pieces to be seen, such as the Omani curved dagger, valuable silver jewelry and other works of oriental art. Also on display is a model of a dhow -- a typical Omani sailing ship -- which presented by the Omani ambassador to the former German foreign minister, Joschka Fischer.
The exhibition was initiated by the German-Omani Association, and is being held in cooperation with the Embassy of Oman in Berlin, and the Omani Ministry of Tourism. It will be on display from March 6 to 29, 2015 at the Museum for Communication Berlin, Leipziger Str. 16, D-10117 Berlin.
The exhibition opening takes place Thursday evening, March 5, 2015 for invited guests; thereafter it will be open to the general public.
Oman became the center of attention at the world's biggest sailing event and northern Europe's largest summer festival, the "Kieler Woche," as Oman Sail's flagship MOD70 "Musandam" set a new course record at the Welcome Race, a 27.5 mile route from Kiel to Eckernförde. The previous best time was beat by 20 minutes.
As a scientist, Prof. Dr. Dr. H.C. Fred Scholz has worked continuously with the Sultanate of Oman for decades. He is considered one of the most knowledgeable experts in the country. However, many people do not know that he was a driving force and played a prominent role in the founding of the German-Omani Association (GOA).
Consequently the Board of the German-Omani Association has decided to bestow on him an honorary membership, which he has gladly accepted. On this occasion the Omani Ambassador to Germany, His Excellence Khalid Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Ba'Omar invited friends and companions of the honorees, as well as the Berlin-based members of the GOA, to a dinner at his residence in Berlin-Dahlem.
